早前為大家報導過，位於波多黎各、曾經係世界上最大單孔望遠鏡嘅阿雷西博天文台，因為兩條主力鋼纜折斷無法修復，將會退役並被拆卸。而最新消息就指，喺拆卸工作都未開始，阿雷西博天文台就已經於昨日自行倒塌。

據當地網絡消息，原本懸掛於接收盤上，重900噸嘅望遠鏡本體已經墜落於接收盤之上，而從高空圖片中亦可以見到接受盤被砸出一個大坑。據知其中一條鋼纜於倒墟時亦擊中天文台嘅學習中心。負責管理整個設施嘅美國國立科學基金會 (NSF) 向媒體《The Verge》證實倒塌事宜，並指好好彩地冇人於事件中受傷，目前正努力評估損毀情況，並修復阿雷西博天文台嘅其他部份。

阿雷西博天文台早前就已經出現過兩次損壞，兩次都係懸掛鋼纜折斷，除咗對接受盤造成破壞外，亦影響望遠鏡嘅整體結構。NSF於上月中宣佈無法搵到一個唔會危及施工人員安全嘅修復方法，所以決定將望遠鏡鏡退役拆卸，並提早清出安全區域。當時仲有人發起聯署要求NSF一定要修復望遠鏡。事後孔明咁睇，證明NSF嘅決定非常正確。
